Bass-baritone Joel Allison is a Canadian concert and opera singer and has garnered praise for his “rich, ringing tone” (Ludwig Van Toronto). A graduate of the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Studio, Joel is now established as a member of the ensemble at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Upcoming highlights with his home company include Leporello in Don Giovanni, Lord Sydney in Il Viaggio a Reims, and Vater in Hänsel und Gretel. Other regular roles in his repertoire with the house include Escamillo in Carmen, Biterolf in Tannhäuser, Ping in Turandot, Schaunard in La Bohème, and Donner in Das Rheingold, in which he was in the the live recording for Naxos DVD.
In the 2023-2024 season, Joel returns to the Canadian Opera Company in the roles of Masetto in Don Giovanni, and the Forester in Janáček’s Přyhody Lyšky Bystroušky, and also made recent debuts with Opéra National de Bordeaux as Alberti in Meyerbeer’s Robert le diable, conducted by Marc Minkowski, at Tiroler Festspiele Erl as Bijou-Alcindor Le Postillion de Lonjumeau, and at the Royal Opera House Muscat as Vater/Peter Hänsel und Gretel.
Dedicated to the concert repertoire and with extensive experience in the works of Handel, Mozart and Bach, Joel has performed across Canada with orchestras and ensembles like Saskatoon Symphony, National Arts Centre Orchestra, Theatre of Early Music, Tafelmusik Chamber Orchestra & Choir, Toronto Consort, Toronto Bach Festival, Festival international de musique baroque de Lamèque, and Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra. As a member of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Joel performed the bass arias in a staged version of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion conducted by Alessandro De Marchi.
